Where to look

The safest way to learn the mushrooms is at the markets in Kunming and Lijiang and on the guided programme in Yulong. Pine-oak forest on the slopes around Lijiang gives matsutake and boletes in the rainy season. Jizong grows from termite nests in the ground and appears in large numbers in August and September.

What grows here

matsutake (matsutake), termite mushroom / jizong (termitomyces), king bolete (prawdziwek), golden chanterelle (kurka)

Forest: mountain pine and oak forest at 2,400–3,200 m

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

Forests in Yunnan are state or collective land, and picking rights usually belong to villagers, so do not pick on your own. On the Yulong programme you may not take away or eat what you collect, and farmers check the baskets. Buy mushrooms at markets or eat them in restaurants, because badly prepared blue-staining boletes (jianshouqing) and other species send hundreds of people to hospital every year.

About the forest

Yunnan is the largest wild mushroom region in China, with over a thousand edible species and huge seasonal mushroom markets. In July 2026 Yulong County near Lijiang launched an educational mushroom foraging programme for visitors. Yunnan mushrooms, including matsutake and jizong, are eaten in restaurants across the province.
