Where to look

Look in older oak and birch woods around Glentrool and Loch Trool and on plantation edges. Chanterelles grow in moss under birch and oak, cep on the edges of older stands. Dense spruce plantations are usually poor for mushrooms.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony)

Forest: Sitka spruce plantations, old oakwoods and moorland

Season: August–November; peak in September and October.

Rules

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code lets you pick mushrooms for your own use, but commercial picking is not covered by access rights and needs the land manager's consent. The forest is run by Forestry and Land Scotland, and picking can be restricted on SSSIs and in reserves. Pick in moderation and leave young mushrooms.

About the forest

Galloway Forest Park in southwest Scotland is the largest forest park in Britain. The damp, oceanic climate gives a long mushroom season. Next to the conifer plantations there are old oak and birch woods.
