Where to look

For your first time, book an oyster safari with a guide who knows the safe beds. Wear tall wellies and thick gloves, because oyster shells are sharp.

What you can find

Pacific oysters, mussels, cockles, crabs, shrimps, waders

What to do: oysters, mussels, mudflat walking, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: Wadden Sea National Park encourages gathering oysters and mussels only where access is allowed and only for your own use. Before eating, check the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen) warnings on algal toxins.

Rules and safety

Gather only where access is allowed, and only as much as fits in a net bag you can carry. Check the tide, because water floods the flats fast and from the sides. Keep away from birds.

About the place

Rømø is the largest Danish island in the Wadden Sea, linked to the mainland by a causeway. On the east side, by the causeway, low tide uncovers beds of wild Pacific oysters. The national park and local guides run oyster safaris (østerssafari) here.

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
