Where to look

Look in the fir and spruce forests around Gérardmer, Xonrupt and La Bresse. Cep grows on the edges of older stands, chanterelles and horn of plenty in damp moss under beech. In autumn check flat shelves on the slopes where leaf litter collects.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), horn of plenty (lejkowiec dęty), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty)

Forest: mountain fir, spruce and beech forest

Season: July–November; peak in September and October.

Rules

In France mushrooms belong to the landowner, and picking by others is tolerated, not a right. In state and commune forests picking for personal use is usually tolerated, while private forests need the owner's permission. A prefecture order (arrêté) can limit amounts, usually to 5 litres per person, and excessive picking can bring fines of 150–750 euro.

About the forest

The Vosges are a mountain range in eastern France covered in fir, spruce and beech. Much of the forest belongs to the state or to communes. The area around Gérardmer is one of the best known places for cep in France.
