Where to look

Look in older beech and oak around Rohrbrunn, Weibersbrunn and Lohr am Main. Summer cep appears in summer under oak and beech, cep later. Parasols grow in clearings and along forest roads.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), summer cep (borowik usiatkowany), chanterelle (kurka), parasol (czubajka kania), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: extensive beech and oak forest on sandstone, with some spruce

Season: July–October; peak in September.

Rules

In Germany you may pick mushrooms only in small amounts for your own use (section 39(3) BNatSchG), and protected species, including cep and chanterelle, only in small amounts for yourself (section 2 BArtSchV). Nature reserves and natural forest reserves (Naturwaldreservat) can have bans, so read the signs. Picking for sale needs a permit.

About the forest

The Spessart is a range of low sandstone hills between Aschaffenburg and Würzburg, one of the largest continuous broadleaf forests in Germany. Old beech and oak dominate. Boletes do well on the acid sandstone soils.
