Look in the fir-spruce forests around St. Blasien and Todtmoos. Cep grows under spruce on acid soils, and winter chanterelles and hedgehogs appear in moss in late autumn. Steep slopes are slippery after rain.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)
Forest: mountain fir-spruce forest with beech
Season: July–November; peak in September and October.
Rules
The German rule of small amounts for personal use applies (section 39(3) BNatSchG and section 2 BArtSchV). Near Ibach a local limit of 1 kg per person applies, and two pickers with 19 kg of cep were fined 1,700 euro. Picking is banned in the Black Forest National Park and in nature reserves.
About the forest
The Black Forest is a mountain range in southwest Germany covered in dense fir and spruce. Rainfall is high, so mushrooms grow even in drier summers. The southern part around St. Blasien has old, large forests.
