Look in state and communal forests around Saint-Brisson and the Lac des Settons. Black trumpets and hedgehogs grow in beech on damp slopes, chanterelles on mossy edges. Douglas fir plantations are usually poor, mixed forest is better.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), black trumpet (lejkowiec dęty), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), parasol (czubajka kania)
Forest: beech and oak forest with Douglas fir and spruce plantations on a granite massif
Season: August–November; peak in September and October.
Rules
In France mushrooms belong to the landowner, and in private forests you need consent. In public forests picking for your own use is usually tolerated, and a prefect's order for the department (Nièvre, Yonne, Saône-et-Loire or Côte-d'Or) can set a limit. The regional park is not a national park, but picking can be banned in nature reserves.
About the forest
The Morvan is a granite massif in Burgundy, covered by a regional nature park (Parc naturel régional du Morvan). The damp climate and the mix of beech woods and conifer plantations give good autumn crops. The area is known for chanterelles, black trumpets and hedgehog mushrooms.
