Look in the fir-beech forest around Kočevje and on the slopes of Kočevski Rog. Cep grows under beech and fir on the deeper soils in karst hollows, chanterelles in moss. Watch for bears, which are common here: make noise and do not leave food.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), parasol (czubajka kania), horn of plenty (lejkowiec dęty), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)
Forest: large fir-beech forest on a karst plateau
Season: July–November; peak in September and October.
Rules
The Slovenian Regulation on the protection of wild fungi allows at most 2 kg of mushrooms per person per day. Protected species are off limits and inspectors seize any surplus. Entry and picking are banned in the old-growth forest reserves (pragozd) of Kočevski Rog.
About the forest
The Kočevje region in southern Slovenia is one of the most forested corners of Central Europe. Fir-beech forest on karst stretches as far as Kočevski Rog. The damp climate suits mushrooms from summer to late autumn.
