Where to look

Look in older spruce with moss around Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Hahnenklee and along forest roads. Chanterelles and birch boletes grow by birches on the edges of clearings and old felling sites. In autumn honey fungus covers the stumps left after felling.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: mountain spruce with beech, clearings after felling, and bogs

Season: July–October; peak in September.

Rules

In Germany you may pick mushrooms only in small amounts for your own use (section 39(3) BNatSchG), and cep, chanterelles, birch boletes and morels are protected and allowed only in small amounts for yourself (section 2 BArtSchV). Picking is banned in Harz National Park, so stay in forests outside its boundary. Selling what you pick is not allowed.

About the forest

The Harz is the highest mountain range in northern Germany, mostly covered with spruce. The Upper Harz around Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Hahnenklee has large forests outside the national park. After droughts and bark beetle outbreaks, parts of the forest are now clearings and young stands.
