Shed antlers have real value. Collectors, craftspeople and dog chew makers buy them. Prices depend on species, size, condition and whether you have a matched pair. Below are indicative prices from listings and the rules for selling legally.
Prices in Poland
| Item | Typical asking price |
|---|---|
| Single red deer shed, medium | about 100 to 300 zł |
| Large red deer shed, 2.8 to 3 kg | about 400 to 500 zł |
| Pair of red deer sheds | about 700 to 1,100 zł |
| Red deer shed sold as a dog chew, 0.5 to 1.5 kg | about 40 to 200 zł |
| Moose shed | about 450 zł for a good palm |
| Fallow deer shed | about 40 to 120 zł |
| Roe deer antlers | about 15 to 140 zł |
Per kilogram, red deer sheds sold as dog chews were usually listed at about 75 to 130 zł per kg (roughly 17 to 30 euros). A ready-made fallow deer chew in one listing worked out at about 99 zł per kg. Antler buyer ads on OLX quoted figures of 80 to 130 zł, but without a clear unit, so always ask whether a price is per kilogram or per piece.
Antlers on a skull and hunting trophies cost much more, even several thousand zł. But they are not sheds, and selling them requires documented legal origin.
What raises and lowers the price
- Freshness: a fresh shed from this season is dark, brown and hard. This is the top grade, often called "brown" in the US.
- Bleaching: an antler that has lain out for a year or more turns pale in the sun. It is cheaper, often called "white", but still fine for decor.
- Chalk: old, chalky, cracked antler is brittle. It has little value and is not suitable for dog chews.
- Chewing: rodents gnaw antler for calcium. Tooth marks lower the price.
- Pairs: two sheds from the same animal are worth more than two odd antlers.
- Points and mass: the bigger and more complex the antler, the more a collector pays.
Prices in the US
In the US sheds are usually sold by the pound. In 2017 a typical price was about 10 dollars a pound, with large, fresh antlers fetching more. According to NPR, buyers in Alaska offered up to 50 dollars a pound for good antler. The dog chew market has driven demand up, and retail chews sell for far more per pound than raw antler.
Where to sell
- Online marketplaces: Allegro and OLX in Poland. Describe species, weight, length and condition, and photograph the antler next to a tape measure.
- Antler buyers: they pay quickly but less. Good for larger amounts of lower-grade antler.
- Dog chew makers: they buy sound, hard antler without cracks.
- Craftspeople: knife makers, carvers and jewellers look for specific sizes.
- Collectors: they pay the most for big pairs and unusual antlers.
Is selling legal?
Poland. The Hunting Law bans selling parts of game animals except those obtained legally or acquired in another legal way (Art. 9(1)(4)). A shed collected legally, outside a national park and nature reserve, falls within that exception. Do not sell antlers from a park, a reserve or a dead animal. More in is shed antler hunting legal. European deer are not covered by CITES, so no permits are needed for sales within the EU. For shipments outside the EU, check the rules of the buyer's country.
Utah. Legally obtained sheds may be bought and sold at any time. A collector selling to a buyer needs no permit, but a buyer who purchases to resell for profit, including dog chew makers, needs a Certificate of Registration costing 150 dollars.
Other US states and Canada. Most states allow the sale of naturally shed antlers, but rules on wildlife parts differ, especially for antlers still attached to a skull. Alberta notes that a shed legal to sell in Alberta may not be legal to sell to buyers in the US. Check the "sale of wildlife parts" section of your state or provincial regulations.
Tax
- Poland, occasional sales: selling a thing within six months, counted from the end of the month you acquired it, is taxable income under the Personal Income Tax Act (Art. 10(1)(8)(d)). A shed has no purchase cost, so the whole amount is income. Sales after that period are not taxed.
- Poland, regular sales: collecting and selling in an organised, continuous way is a business. Up to a revenue limit you can run an unregistered activity. In 2026 the limit is counted per quarter at 225% of the minimum wage. Check the current amount on biznes.gov.pl.
- Platform reporting: under the EU DAC7 rules, platforms such as Allegro and OLX report sellers with at least 30 sales or at least 2,000 euros in a year to the tax office.
- United States: money from selling sheds is taxable income. Regular selling can count as a business. Ask a tax adviser.
