Where to look

Search in winter after storms from the east and north-east, in the shingle and seaweed bands by the groynes south of the pier.

Wind and waves work best from: E, NE, SE.

Local rules

Picking up small, loose finds for your own use is usually tolerated. Some councils ban removing shingle and stones from the beach. Keep away from the crumbling cliffs north of the town.

About the beach

Southwold is a small town at the mouth of the River Blyth, with a sand and shingle beach. The Suffolk coast is one of the few places in Britain where the sea washes up amber.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
