Where to look

Go out a day or two after a storm, once the sea has calmed. Autumn and winter winds from the north-east and east bring the most. Search the band of seaweed and wood.

Wind and waves work best from: NE, N, E.

Local rules

Collecting amber on the beach is allowed. On Usedom, especially in the north of the island, the sea also washes up white phosphorus from bombs dropped on Peenemünde in 1943. It looks like amber and ignites by itself once dry, so keep any doubtful find in a metal tin, never in a pocket.

About the beach

Koserow sits on the narrowest part of the German side of Usedom, below the Streckelsberg cliff. Usedom beaches are among the best places for amber on the German Baltic coast.
