Where to watch

Start at the NABU Storchenschmiede centre on Nauener Straße, where you can find out where to watch from. In the evening, stand by the roads between the fields and the ponds and watch the cranes fly in for the night. In the morning the birds leave for the Rhinluch fields.

What you can see

common crane, taiga/tundra bean goose, greater white-fronted goose, white-tailed eagle

Best time: October, dusk and dawn

Rules

The Linum ponds are a protected area, so do not walk on dikes closed to the public or onto fields with feeding birds. Watch from roads and car parks, do not get out next to flocks and do not point headlights at the ponds. Do not fly a drone over the birds, because German nature law bans disturbing them.

About the place

Linum lies in the Rhinluch, about 45 km north-west of Berlin. Its shallow ponds are the largest inland crane resting site in Europe. In mid-October 2006 a single count found 72,000 cranes and 60,000 geese here.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
