Where to watch

Book a night in a hide with a local operator, because you cannot reach the viewing sites on your own. You go in during the afternoon, sit quietly until morning and walk out with the guide. Bear numbers are highest from June to August.

What you can see

brown bear, wolverine, wolf, golden eagle

Best time: June to July, evening and night

Rules

Do not look for bears on your own and do not walk alone near the hides, because the animals there are used to bait. Follow the guide, do not leave the hide before the session ends and do not use flash. The border zone with Russia has its own movement restrictions, so ask the operator where you may walk.

About the place

Kuhmo in the Kainuu region, near the Russian border, is one of the best places in Europe to watch brown bears. Private companies run forest hides here, from which you can see bears, wolverines and sometimes wolves. Summer nights are light, so you can watch and photograph almost until morning.
