Best time: October to mid-November, dusk
Rules
Large parts of the park are strictly protected and you can enter them only with a park guide (Hortobágy National Park Directorate). At the ponds you walk only on the trail and use the towers, not dikes closed to the public. Do not disturb flocks on the fields and do not fly a drone.
About the place
Hortobágy National Park is the largest protected area in Hungary, with puszta grassland and fish ponds. In autumn it is one of the most important crane stopover sites in Europe, where tens of thousands of birds roost. Geese and ducks also stop on the Halastó ponds.
