Where to watch

Go to Trandansen, which has parking and a viewing area by the fields where the cranes feed. Numbers are highest in the morning, when birds fly in from the roosts. The naturum visitor centre is on the east side of the lake near Broddetorp.

What you can see

common crane, whooper swan, taiga/tundra bean goose, white-tailed eagle

Best time: late March to mid-April, morning

Rules

Parts of the lake and shore are bird protection areas with no entry in spring, so check the maps of the Västra Götaland County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen). The right of public access (allemansrätten) does not allow you to disturb birds or walk on crops. Stay at the marked viewing areas and park only in car parks.

About the place

Hornborgasjön is a shallow lake in Västergötland, known for the spring stopover of cranes before they fly on to their breeding grounds. The record is 27,300 cranes, counted on 3 April 2019. The birds dance on the fields by the lake, which gives the Trandansen site its name.
