Where to watch

All trips leave from Seahouses harbour, and you book the boat with one of the operators. Landings on Inner Farne run from April to September, and the peak-season landing ticket costs £17 for an adult. Landings can be cancelled in rough seas, so pick a calm day.

What you can see

Atlantic puffin, grey seal, Arctic tern, common guillemot

Best time: May to July, mornings with calm sea

Rules

No dogs, including assistance dogs, are allowed on the islands. Stay on the boardwalks, because terns defend nests right next to the path, and a hat protects you from their attacks. Watch the seals from the boat at a distance, and do not fly a drone over the colonies.

About the place

The Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast belong to the National Trust. About 43,000 pairs of puffins nest here, and a grey seal colony lives on the rocks. Puffin numbers peak from May to July.
