Join a guided walk from Kongsvoll or Hjerkinn, or scan for herds from paths in the Driva valley. Muskoxen keep to valley floors and slopes, so binoculars are enough. In summer, set out in the morning before it gets warm.
What you can see
muskox, wild reindeer, rock ptarmigan
Best time: June to September, morning
Rules
Muskoxen are potentially dangerous, so keep at least 200 m away and back off if an animal looks towards you. In Norway dogs must be on a lead from 1 April to 20 August. The right to roam (allemannsretten) lets you walk on the fell, but do not disturb reindeer, especially during calving.
About the place
Muskoxen were brought to Dovrefjell in 1947, and today it is the only place in mainland Europe where they are easy to see. Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park also protects wild reindeer. Kongsvoll and Hjerkinn are the main starting points.
