Where to watch

From Tulcea, go out by boat with a local guide who knows the channels and lakes. Leave at dawn, when birds are feeding and the water is calm. Pelicans are most often seen on lakes and over shallows in May and June.

What you can see

great white pelican, Dalmatian pelican, pygmy cormorant, purple heron

Best time: May to June, dawn

Rules

Entry to the reserve needs a permit issued by the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority (ARBDD). Do not enter the strictly protected zones, and boats must keep their distance from pelican colonies. Do not fly a drone without ARBDD consent.

About the place

The Danube Delta is a biosphere reserve and the largest reedbed area in Europe. In spring great white and Dalmatian pelicans, herons and pygmy cormorants nest here. Tulcea is the main gateway town, where boats leave for the inner delta.
