Where to look

Look for juniper and wild thyme on dry hills and pastures around Smolniki and Turtul. Meadowsweet grows on lake and stream banks, and dog rose on field margins. You can pick bilberries and wild strawberries in the pine forests to the south, towards the Augustów Forest.

What grows here

common juniper, wild thyme (breckland thyme), yarrow, dog rose (rosehip), dandelion, stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), common sorrel, wild strawberry, meadowsweet, bilberry

Habitats: glacial hills with pastures, field margins and juniper clumps, lakeside meadows and pine forest on sand

Rules

Picking plants is banned in Wigry National Park and in nature reserves. Suwałki Landscape Park does not ban picking for your own use, but most pastures are private land, so ask the owner. Near the Lithuanian and Russian borders, watch for markings of the border strip.

About the place

The Suwałki region is a land of glacial hills, lakes and pastures by the Lithuanian border. It is cooler than the rest of Poland, so the season starts later. Low-intensity grazing favours juniper, wild thyme and yarrow.
