Where to look

Look for wild thyme and juniper on the sandy edges of pine forest around Józefów and Susiec, and for wild marjoram and yarrow on sunny slopes. Elder, nettle and garlic mustard grow around old farmsteads and in scrub by the rivers. Wild strawberries and bilberries grow on felling sites and in open pine forest.

What grows here

stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), dandelion, wild thyme (breckland thyme), common juniper, dog rose (rosehip), small-leaved lime (linden), yarrow, wild marjoram (oregano), wild strawberry, bilberry, garlic mustard

Habitats: beech and fir woods on the hills, pine forest on sand, warm limestone grassland and meadows in the Tanew and Wieprz valleys

Rules

Picking any plant is banned in Roztocze National Park and in nature reserves (art. 15 of the Nature Conservation Act). Wild garlic is protected, and the regulation allows it to be harvested, with a permit only, in the Silesian, Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian voivodeships, so do not pick it in Roztocze. In state forests you may pick for your own use, except in plantations under 4 m and places signed as closed.

About the place

Roztocze is a belt of hills between Kraśnik and the Ukrainian border, a mosaic of beech woods, pine forest, meadows and grassland. Limestone and sandy soils mix within a small area, so many herb species grow here. The area around Józefów and Susiec lies outside the national park.
