See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look for wild garlic in spring in damp beech woods by streams, and for bilberries in summer on slopes above the forest. Wild thyme and yarrow grow on the summer pastures. Elder and nettle keep to villages and old shepherds' huts.
What grows here
wild garlic (ramsons), bilberry, common juniper, wild thyme (breckland thyme), stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), wild strawberry, yarrow, common sorrel, dog rose (rosehip), meadowsweet
Habitats: beech and fir forest on the slopes, mountain meadows and summer pastures (estives), juniper and bilberry scrub above the treeline
Rules
The French rule applies: plants belong to the landowner, and picking for personal use is usually tolerated. The prefect can restrict picking of some species, such as arnica, yellow gentian or bilberry (Code de l'environnement, art. L412-1). Picking plants is usually banned in nature reserves, and on grazed pastures keep away from herds and livestock guardian dogs.
About the place
The Couserans around Seix is a wild part of the Pyrenees inside the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park. Valley beech woods hold wild garlic, and higher summer pastures hold wild thyme, juniper and bilberry. Shepherding still shapes the landscape.
