See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look for meadowsweet in wet meadows by the Leśna and Narewka rivers, outside reserves. Limes flower in July in the woods and in village streets, but do not pick by the busy Hajnówka to Białowieża road. Wood sorrel and wild strawberries grow along tracks in managed forest.
What grows here
stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), dandelion, small-leaved lime (linden), meadowsweet, yarrow, common sorrel, wild strawberry, bilberry, wood sorrel, dog rose (rosehip), garlic mustard
Habitats: oak-hornbeam forest with lime, alder carr and floodplain forest, mixed conifer forest, plus clearings and meadows on the forest edge
Rules
Picking plants is banned in Białowieża National Park and in the forest's many nature reserves, whose boundaries are signed. Near the Belarusian border there is a border strip and at times a buffer zone with a ban on entry, so check Border Guard (Straż Graniczna) notices before you go. In state forests you may pick for your own use, except in plantations under 4 m.
About the place
Białowieża Forest is one of the best preserved lowland forests in Europe. Most of the Polish side is state forest run by the Białowieża, Hajnówka and Browsk forest districts, not national park. Old oak-hornbeam woods give lime, wild strawberry and wood sorrel, and meadows on the forest edge give yarrow and meadowsweet.
