Where to look

Pick thyme in spring, in April and May, on the stony slopes of the Petit Luberon near Bonnieux and Ménerbes, cutting tips from many plants. Juniper grows in scrub on the ridges. Limes flower in June in the valleys and villages.

What grows here

common thyme, common juniper, dog rose (rosehip), wild marjoram (oregano), elder (elderflower, elderberry), dandelion, yarrow, small-leaved lime (linden)

Habitats: garrigue on limestone slopes with thyme and juniper, holm and downy oak, lavender fields and valleys with lime

Rules

In France plants belong to the landowner, and picking in state and municipal forests is only tolerated for personal use. The prefect can restrict or ban picking of chosen species (Code de l'environnement, art. L412-1, R412-1). From June to September, access to the Vaucluse forest massifs depends on the daily fire risk level, so check the prefecture notice before you go.

About the place

The Luberon is a limestone range in Provence, covered by a regional nature park. Garrigue with wild thyme, known locally as farigoule, grows on the dry slopes. The season starts early, and in hot summers the vegetation dries out.
