See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look for yarrow, sorrel and wild thyme on mown meadows in the valleys, and for meadowsweet in wet meadows and ditches by streams. Elder and nettle grow where villages once stood, often next to old fruit trees. Bilberries grow higher up, on the edges of beech and spruce forest.
What grows here
stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), yarrow, wild thyme (breckland thyme), meadowsweet, bilberry, wild strawberry, dog rose (rosehip), common sorrel, ground elder, white dead-nettle
Habitats: mountain meadows and former pastures in the valleys, scrub on the sites of abandoned villages, Carpathian beech woods and alder by streams
Rules
Picking plants is banned in Bieszczady National Park, including the high mountain meadows (połoniny), and in nature reserves. Wild garlic, which grows here in beech woods, is partially protected and harvesting needs a permit from the regional environmental directorate (RDOŚ) in Rzeszów, so without one do not pick it. A border zone applies near Ukraine, and you may meet bears in the forest, so make noise as you walk.
About the place
The valleys around Cisna and Wetlina are meadows, overgrown pastures and the sites of villages emptied after the war. Elder, nettle and dog rose still grow by the old farmsteads. The season starts 2 to 3 weeks later than in the lowlands.
