Where to look

Search the rocks by the harbour and the beaches south of it at low water. Skip it in a big swell or an easterly wind, because waves wash over the ledges.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, sea urchins, sea slugs, kelp

What to do: rockpooling, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: The waters are a voluntary marine reserve, so do not collect shellfish here. In Scotland, area classifications and biotoxin warnings are published by Food Standards Scotland.

Rules and safety

Reserve rules apply: look in place and put stones back. Stay on the paths on the St Abb's Head cliffs. Access to the shore follows the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

About the place

St Abbs is a small fishing village with a harbour and a rocky shore. In 1984 Britain's first voluntary marine reserve, the St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve, was set up here. Clear water and rock make for rich pools.
