Where to look

Rockpool on the causeway and the rocks near the mainland rather than on the island itself. Safe crossing times are posted at the coastwatch lookout above the causeway.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, limpets, barnacles, seaweeds

What to do: rockpooling, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: This is a protected area, so do not collect shellfish here. Before eating shellfish from anywhere else in Wales, check the FSA classification and local authority warnings.

Rules and safety

You can only walk to the island for about 2.5 hours either side of low water. When the causeway is covered, trying to wade or swim across can be fatal. Part of the island may close during the bird nesting season, so check the National Trust notices on site.

About the place

Worm's Head is a tidal island at the tip of the Gower peninsula. At low tide you can cross to it over a rocky causeway, passing rock pools on the way. It is one of the best known places in Wales where the tide cuts people off.
