Where to look

Walk onto the reef on the west side of the bay at low water. Besides the big pools, look at the smaller pools and cracks across the reef.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, sea urchins, gobies, seaweeds

What to do: rockpooling, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: This is a place for swimming and looking, not for gathering shellfish. In Ireland the SFPA publishes the status of production areas and the Marine Institute the biotoxin results.

Rules and safety

The reef faces the Atlantic swell: in big waves keep away from the edge. Check the tide, because the pools are only reachable around low water. Look at animals in place.

About the place

The Pollock Holes are three natural rock pools on the Duggerna Reef at Kilkee. Every tide replaces their water, so life in the pools is rich. The reef shelters Kilkee bay from the Atlantic.
