Where to look

Search the rocks around the islets at low water, away from the harbour. Mussels grow in clumps on the rocks of the lower shore.

What you can find

mussels, crabs, starfish, sea urchins, anemones, kelp, wracks

What to do: rockpooling, seaweed, mussels, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: In Norway you may pick mussels for your own use. Before eating, always check the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) shellfish warning (skjellvarsel), because toxins appear at different times of year.

Rules and safety

The right of public access (allemannsretten) lets you walk the shore, but respect private quays and fish drying racks. The water is very cold, so stay out of it unless you need to go in. Check tides with Kartverket.

About the place

Henningsvær is a fishing village on islets off the south coast of Austvågøya in Lofoten. The tides are smaller than in Brittany, but low tide uncovers a band of rock and seaweed. Clean, cold water makes for rich shore life.
