Where to look

Walk the limestone slabs at low water and look into the cracks. Seaweeds grow on the lower shore, which shows on big low tides.

What you can find

anemones, crabs, limpets, periwinkles, wracks, dulse, carrageen

What to do: rockpooling, seaweed, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: The oysters nearby are farmed and must not be taken. Do not eat wild shellfish without checking the SFPA classification and the latest Marine Institute biotoxin results.

Rules and safety

The shore lies in Natura 2000 sites (SACs). Do not touch the oyster trestles and bags. Take seaweed only in small amounts for your own use, cut with scissors; commercial harvesting needs a licence.

About the place

The Flaggy Shore is a Burren limestone shore on Galway Bay, near New Quay. Limestone slabs run down into the sea and form shallow pools. The area is known for oysters from a local farm.
