Where to look

Search Seaham Hall Beach and the beaches north of the harbour at low tide, turning over stones at the water’s edge. Storms from the east expose new layers.

What you can find

white, green, brown, seafoam and turquoise, multicoloured “multis”, bottle necks and stoppers

Best wind: E, NE, SE

Rules

Picking up small, loose finds for your own use is usually tolerated. The Durham coast cliffs are unstable: do not stand below them. Check tide times.

About the beach

Seaham is the best-known sea glass spot in Europe. From 1853 to 1921 the Londonderry Bottleworks, the largest glass bottle works in Britain, operated here, and its waste glass was dumped at sea.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
