Where to look

Look in the spruce forests around Žďár nad Sázavou, Cikháj and Tři Studně. Cep and bay boletes grow in moss under older spruce, birch boletes by birches near the ponds. Damp hollows hold water longer than the ridges.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: spruce and mixed forest among the ponds and bogs of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

This is the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO), where picking for personal use is allowed. Nature reserves and bogs have bans, and signs mark their boundaries. Do not drive into the forest: parking on forest roads can bring heavy fines.

About the forest

Žďárské vrchy is an upland area of forests and ponds in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Spruce on cool, damp ground dominates. Vysočina is one of the regions where Czechs pick the most mushrooms.
