Where to look

Look in pine and spruce along forest roads and trails from Klitmøller and Vangså. Chanterelles grow in moss under older trees, slippery jacks and saffron milk caps under younger pines. The dunes and heath outside the forest are poor for mushrooms.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), saffron milk cap (rydz), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony)

Forest: coastal pine and spruce plantations on dunes

Season: June–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

On Naturstyrelsen land you may pick wild mushrooms only for your own use and in limited amounts, and systematic picking over several days and picking for sale are banned. In Danish state forests you may pick anywhere in the forest, but in private forests only what you can reach from roads and paths. In the national park read the signs, as some areas may be closed.

About the forest

The dune plantations of Thy on the west coast of Jutland are pine and spruce forests planted on sand dunes, now part of Thy National Park. They are state owned and managed by the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen). Chanterelles appear here from June.
