Rules

The German rule of picking for your own household applies. Cep, chanterelles, birch boletes, morels and weeping milk cap are protected but may be taken for yourself and your family, while other protected species, such as the royal bolete and yellow knight, are banned. Selling protected species is banned, breaches can be fined, and in nature reserves you should read the signs.

About the forest

The Thuringian Forest is a wooded range in central Germany, with the Rennsteig trail running along the ridge. The eastern part, the Thuringian Slate Mountains around Katzhütte and Neuhaus am Rennweg, has large spruce forests. Mushroom picking has a long tradition here.
