Where to look

Look in second-growth Douglas fir along forest roads above Sechelt and Gibsons. Chanterelles grow in moss under 30–60-year-old Douglas fir, hedgehogs in damp litter under hemlock. On forest roads watch for logging trucks and bears.

What grows here

Pacific golden chanterelle (kurka), king bolete (prawdziwek), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), morel (smardz), chicken of the woods (żółciak siarkowy)

Forest: coastal rainforest: Douglas fir, western hemlock, western red cedar

Season: September–November; morels on burns in spring.

Rules

On provincial Crown land you may pick mushrooms without a permit, but not in provincial or national parks, ecological reserves, protected areas or recreation sites. Private land, leased land and First Nations reserves need permission. Crown land can be closed to picking, so check with FrontCounter BC.

About the forest

The Sunshine Coast is a stretch of coast northwest of Vancouver, reached by ferry from Horseshoe Bay. Damp Douglas fir and hemlock forest on the slopes of the Coast Mountains gives heavy chanterelle flushes in autumn. Much of the land is provincial Crown land.
