Look in the pine forests around Navaleno, San Leonardo de Yagüe and Covaleda. Saffron milk caps grow in grass and younger pines, pine boletes under older trees in the needle litter. The best time is a few days after the first autumn rains.
What grows here
saffron milk cap (rydz), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), pine bolete (borowik sosnowy), chanterelle (kurka), king oyster (boczniak mikołajkowy)
Forest: large Scots pine and black pine forest in the Pinar Grande
Season: September–November; king oysters and morels also appear in spring.
Rules
Most forests in Soria are regulated mushroom areas (acotados micológicos), where you must buy a permit, for example for two days or the season. A recreational permit allows up to 5 kg of mushrooms per day, and a commercial one up to 50 kg. The Guardia Civil checks pickers and seizes mushrooms picked without a permit, so check current prices and rules at micocyl.es.
About the forest
The province of Soria in Castile and León is one of the most important mushroom areas in Spain. The Pinar Grande and the forests around Navaleno and Covaleda are huge pine forests on a high plateau. Saffron milk caps and boletes are a mainstay of the local economy and cooking.
