Where to look

Look in pine forest around Sant Llorenç de Morunys, in the Vall de Lord and below Port del Comte. Saffron milk caps grow in grass under younger pines, boletes in older forest on higher slopes. At weekends the forest near roads is heavily searched, so walk further from the car parks.

What grows here

saffron milk cap (rydz), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), black trumpet (lejkowiec dęty), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny)

Forest: black pine and Scots pine forest in the Pre-Pyrenees

Season: September–November; peak in October.

Rules

Catalonia has no general limit, but most forest is private and the owner can ban picking or charge a fee. In Solsonès some estates sell permits, for example the El Monegal estate charged 10 euro for up to 3 kg. Read the signs at the forest entrance, and natural parks have their own rules.

About the forest

Solsonès in central Catalonia is one of the main mushroom regions of Spain, with large pine forests at the foot of the Pyrenees. Catalans come here in large numbers in autumn for saffron milk caps (rovellons) and boletes. The area holds a mushroom fair (Fira del Bolet).
