Look in the pine and beech forest around Camigliatello Silano, Lorica and Lake Cecita. Saffron milk caps grow in younger pine, cep in beech and on the edges of older pine. Caesar's mushroom appears in warmer forest lower on the slopes.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), saffron milk cap (rydz), Caesar's mushroom (muchomor cesarski), chanterelle (kurka), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny)
Forest: Calabrian black pine, beech and fir forest on a granite plateau
Season: September–November; peak in October.
Rules
Calabria requires a permit: non-residents buy a tourist permit (permesso micologico turistico) for 3, 7 or 30 days at 5, 10 or 20 euro. The limit is 3 kg per person per day, picking only in daylight and in rigid, ventilated containers, and fines are 100–500 euro plus confiscation. In Sila National Park picking is allowed only where and as the park authority permits, and the local ASL mushroom inspection office (ispettorato micologico) checks finds free of charge.
About the forest
The Sila is a high plateau in Calabria, covered with black pine and beech forest, partly within Sila National Park. Camigliatello Silano holds a mushroom festival every year and is the mushroom capital of southern Italy. Autumn rain brings big flushes of cep and saffron milk caps.
