Look in Douglas fir and tanoak east of Highway 1, along trails from the car parks. Chanterelles grow under oaks, king boletes under Bishop pine. Mushrooms start a few weeks after the first heavy rain.
What grows here
golden chanterelle (kurka), king bolete (prawdziwek), black trumpet (lejkowiec dęty), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty)
Forest: coastal Douglas fir, Bishop pine and tanoak forest
Season: November–February; peak in December and January.
Rules
The park has a daily weight limit per person, checked by rangers with a scale, and press reports say it was cut from 5 to 2 pounds, so check the current figure on the signs. Selling is banned, and leading group mushroom walks needs a permit. Picking mushrooms is banned in other California state parks.
About the forest
Salt Point on the Sonoma County coast is the only California state park where ordinary visitors may pick mushrooms. Winter rain brings golden chanterelles, king boletes and black trumpets to the Douglas fir and oak forest. The season is offset from Europe's and runs through the winter.
