Where to look

Look in older beech and spruce along forest roads north of Saint-Hubert, towards Fourneau Saint-Michel. Chanterelles and black trumpets grow in damp beech, cep on the edges of spruce. On hunting days access can be closed, with dates posted on signs.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), black trumpet (lejkowiec dęty), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: extensive beech and spruce forest on the Ardennes plateau

Season: August–November; peak in September and October.

Rules

In Wallonia you may pick up to 10 litres of mushrooms per person per day, for your own use only and between sunrise and sunset, and picking is suspended during hunts. In state forests picking is allowed unless a ban applies, while in communal and private forests you need consent, and some municipalities (such as Libin) reserve picking for residents. For breaches the Walloon Public Service (SPW) offers a settlement of 50–150 euro.

About the forest

The area around Saint-Hubert in the Belgian Ardennes is one of the largest forest blocks in Wallonia, with beech and spruce on a high plateau. Much of it is state forest (forêts domaniales). It is also an important hunting area.
