Where to look

Look in spruce and mixed forest around Rogla, Areh and Kope, along forest roads. Cep grows in moss under spruce, chanterelles in open forest with beech. Keep to the boardwalks on bogs such as those at the Lovrenška jezera lakes.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: spruce and beech on a silicate massif with bogs

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

Slovenia's decree on the protection of wild fungi allows at most 2 kg of mushrooms per person per day. Protected species are banned, and inspectors confiscate any excess. Picking is banned in reserves and on protected bogs.

About the forest

Pohorje is a large forested massif in northeastern Slovenia, above Maribor. Spruce and beech on acid soil give cep and chanterelles from July. On the ridge there are bogs and small lakes, partly protected as reserves.
