chanterelle (kurka), chicken of the woods (żółciak siarkowy), hen of the woods / maitake (żagwica listkowata), black trumpet (lejkowiec dęty), morel (smardz)
Forest: damp Appalachian broadleaf forest (oak, maple, tulip tree) with hemlock and rhododendron
Season: June–October; morels in April.
Rules
In the National Forests in North Carolina you may pick small amounts of mushrooms for personal use without a permit. Selling and larger amounts need a permit from the ranger district, and breaking federal rules can bring fines. Nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park has separate rules.
About the forest
Pisgah National Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina lies in one of the richest temperate regions for fungi. Warm, wet summers give chanterelles from June. The Brevard and Asheville area has a strong foraging community.
