See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look in the pine plantations of the state forests around Oberon, along road edges and in younger stands with grass. Saffron milk caps grow in needle litter under younger pines, slippery jacks on grassy edges. Do not pick under oaks or in towns, where the deadly death cap grows.
What grows here
saffron milk cap (rydz), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), Jersey cow mushroom (maślak sitarz), king bolete (prawdziwek), parasol (czubajka kania)
Forest: Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) plantations on the tablelands
Season: March–June; peak in April and May.
Rules
NSW state forests are run by the Forestry Corporation of NSW, and recreational picking in pine plantations is common. I did not find a clear rule on limits, so check current rules and closures (logging, fire danger) on the Forestry Corporation website. Picking is banned in NSW national parks.
About the forest
Oberon on the Central Tablelands is a centre of pine plantations in New South Wales. European mycorrhizal fungi came with the pines, so saffron milk caps and slippery jacks grow here in autumn. Autumn picking in the state forests is a local tradition.
