Where to look

Look for morels in May under aspen, ash and dying elms and on burn sites. Chanterelles grow in summer in oak woods, and hen of the woods in autumn at the base of old oaks. The Michigan DNR publishes maps of public land.

What grows here

morel (smardz), chanterelle (kurka), hen of the woods / maitake (żagwica listkowata), chicken of the woods (żółciak siarkowy), king bolete (prawdziwek)

Forest: broadleaf forest (oak, aspen, maple) and pine plantations

Season: April–May for morels; July–October for chanterelles and hen of the woods.

Rules

On Michigan state land mushrooms may be picked for personal use only, not for resale. On private land you need the owner's permission, and in Manistee National Forest small amounts for personal use usually need no permit, but check with the ranger district. Selling wild mushrooms requires state certification.

About the forest

Mesick in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan calls itself the morel capital and holds a mushroom festival every May. Around it lie Manistee National Forest and the Pere Marquette State Forest. After the spring morels come summer chanterelles and autumn hen of the woods.
