Look in spruce and pine along the roads up to Lifjell from Bø and Seljord, below the tree line. Chanterelles grow in moss in mixed forest with birch, winter chanterelles in autumn in damp spruce. There are few mushrooms on the plateau above the forest.
What grows here
chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony)
Forest: spruce and pine on the slopes, birch and open plateau higher up
Season: July–October; peak in August and September.
Rules
Allemannsretten lets you pick mushrooms on uncultivated land (utmark) without the owner's consent. Protected areas have their own regulations (verneforskrift), so check the signs. In season you can have your finds checked at a free mushroom control (soppkontroll).
About the forest
Lifjell above Bø is a popular hiking area in Telemark, with forest on the slopes and an open plateau above. Spruce and pine give chanterelles and winter chanterelles. Telemark has a milder climate than the mountains of central Norway and a long season.
