Where to look

Look in pine and mixed forest around Palmse, Võsu and Oandu, along the RMK nature trails. Chanterelles grow in moss under pine and birch, birch boletes on the edges of bogs. Go onto the bogs only on boardwalks.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), saffron milk cap (rydz), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy)

Forest: pine and spruce forest and bogs on the Gulf of Finland

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

Estonia's everyman's right (igaüheõigus) lets you pick mushrooms in state forests and on unmarked private land in daytime. Picking is usually allowed in Lahemaa National Park, but it can be restricted in strict protection zones (sihtkaitsevöönd). Check the zone rules with the Environmental Board (Keskkonnaamet).

About the forest

Lahemaa on Estonia's north coast is the country's oldest national park, about an hour's drive from Tallinn. Pine, spruce and bogs give chanterelles, birch boletes and cep. Estonians pick mushrooms here in large numbers in August and September.
