Where to look

Look in pine forest with reindeer lichen and lingonberry around Kuusamo and Ruka. Birch boletes grow by birches on bog edges, cep in drier pine forest. The season starts early, often in July.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), saffron milk cap (rydz), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy)

Forest: taiga: pine and spruce forest with birch

Season: July–September; peak in August.

Rules

Everyman's rights (jokamiehenoikeudet) let you pick mushrooms without the owner's permission and with no quantity limit. Picking is allowed in most national parks, such as Oulanka, but not in strict nature reserves and closed zones, so check the rules on luontoon.fi. The border zone with Russia is closed without a permit.

About the forest

Kuusamo lies in northeast Finland, by the Russian border, in the taiga zone. Pine and spruce forest on moraine gives cep and birch boletes in a short, intense season. There is so much forest that there is little competition.
