Where to look

Look in the needle litter under pines along forest roads and trails, after the first heavy autumn rain. Saffron milk caps grow under younger pines on the edges of stands, slippery jacks at the same time. The native eucalypt forest does not produce these species.

What grows here

pine ring / saffron milk cap (rydz), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny)

Forest: radiata pine plantations with native eucalypt forest

Season: April–June; peak in May.

Rules

ForestrySA has its own rules on collecting fungi and plants in its forests, which I could not confirm, so check them on the ForestrySA website before you go. The forest is closed to visitors on Total Fire Ban days. Do not pick in national parks or reserves, and deadly death caps grow in Australia.

About the forest

Kuitpo Forest in the Adelaide Hills, about 45 minutes' drive from Adelaide, is a ForestrySA forest with pine plantations and native eucalypts. Saffron milk caps and slippery jacks grow here after autumn rain. The forest has walking and bike trails and picnic areas.

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
