Look in the needle litter under pines on plantation edges and by forest roads. Saffron milk caps grow under younger pines, slippery jacks on grassy edges. Eucalypt forest gives few edible mushrooms, and the deadly death cap grows under oaks in Victoria.
What grows here
saffron milk cap (rydz), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), Jersey cow mushroom (maślak sitarz), parasol (czubajka kania), field mushroom (pieczarka polna)
Forest: pine plantations and eucalypt forest on the hills
Season: March–June; peak in April and May.
Rules
Many plantations in Victoria belong to HVP Plantations, which allows recreation only with a free Human Power Pass and does not mention mushroom picking in its rules, so ask HVP. State forests and parks follow Parks Victoria and state environment department rules, and picking is banned in national parks. Victorian authorities warn against picking wild mushrooms unless you are sure of the species.
About the forest
Creswick near Ballarat is a historic centre of forestry in Victoria, surrounded by pine plantations and eucalypt forest. In autumn saffron milk caps and slippery jacks appear in the pines. It is one of the closer areas to Melbourne for autumn foraging.
