What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), saffron milk cap (rydz), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)
Forest: mountain spruce and fir forest of the Eastern Carpathians
Season: July–October; peak in August and September.
Rules
In Romania picking mushrooms in the forest needs the consent of the forest district (ocol silvic) or the owner, and picking without it brings fines of 500–5,000 lei and confiscation. Ask the forest district in Vatra Dornei about a permit and the amount allowed for your own use. Bears live in these forests, so do not walk alone at dusk and make noise.
About the forest
The area around Vatra Dornei in Romanian Bukovina has large spruce forests of the Eastern Carpathians and is one of the richest mushroom regions in Romania. Cep and chanterelles from Bukovina go to buying points and for export in season. There is a Polish minority in the region.
